Seven Questions to Ask a Plastic Surgeon

When you’re in the process of finding a plastic surgeon in Columbus, you need to be prepared with a comprehensive list of questions to screen the candidates. But do you know which questions should be on that list?
Part of our mission statement is devoted to patient education, and we believe that an informed, empowered patient helps create a successful surgical outcome. In that spirit, we’d like to suggest the following questions to ask a plastic surgeon before you commit to his or her services. If you’re not satisfied with the answers you receive, continue your search, because asking questions is only half of the equation. Nothing is more important than feeling comfortable with the doctor who will perform surgery on you.

Do you have any national certifications?

Your surgeon should be board-certified in one of the specialties pertinent to cosmetic surgery. Dr. Christine Sullivan is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and Dr. Michael Sullivan is certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Both are members of respected professional organizations.

Where do you operate?

A surgeon should operate in an accredited facility—either a surgery center, a hospital, or practice-affiliated surgery suite. Our facility, The Sullivan Centre, is licensed by the state of Ohio and accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. Drs. Christine and Michael Sullivan found the Centre in 1996.

What is your area of expertise?

Any prospective surgeon should willingly share all the details of his or her education, training, and specialization. We highly recommend that you choose a surgeon who specializes in the procedure you are seeking. Drs. Sullivan specialize to provide our patients with expertise in specific surgeries; Dr. Christine Sullivan performs breast surgeries, body contouring, and liposuction, while Dr. Michael Sullivan limits his practice to surgery of the face and neck.

How much will the procedure cost?

After your consultation with a prospective surgeon, you should receive a comprehensive breakdown of all the fees involved with your procedure. At the Sullivan Centre, our patient coordinator will prepare a detailed cost analysis for you based on our surgeons’ recommendations.

Do you have hospital privileges?

You should only choose a surgeon who answers “yes” to this question. The hospitals thoroughly review credentials and approve only qualified physicians to perform surgery in their institutions. Dr. Christine Sullivan has hospital privileges at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital, and Upper Arlington Surgery Center; Dr. Michael Sullivan has hospital privileges at Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital, Ohio Surgery Center, Upper Arlington Surgery Center, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

What are the qualifications of your staff and support personnel?

The office staff and attending personnel should be as specialized as the surgeon. At the Sullivan Centre, we employ a staff that is specially trained to support cosmetic surgery patients. In addition, every surgery we perform is attended by a board certified anesthesiologist.

Can I see results of your work?

Every surgeon should share their own patient before-and-after photos with you; it’s important that the results you see in the photos match the outcome you envision. Drs. Sullivan share photos with you during your consultation, and thoroughly discuss your areas of concern so that you have realistic expectations for your surgery.

We invite you to bring your list of questions to The Sullivan Centre for a consultation!
