Breast Asymmetry

Breast Asymmetry Correction in Columbus, Ohio

It is not uncommon for every woman to notice a slight difference in the size of her breasts. Any changes in sizing that occur quickly, however, should be discussed with your physician immediately. The rule of thumb is that most breast asymmetries are less than a cup size in difference. Breast asymmetry correction surgery is the process of making your breasts appear more symmetrical in appearance and even in size.

Why have breast asymmetry correction surgery?

  • To achieve symmetry in your breast size
  • To better fit into bras
  • To fit into clothing better
  • To avoid the use of prosthetic breast inserts
  • To feel more confident

Some breast asymmetry corrective surgeries are considered reconstructive in nature and, therefore, may be covered by insurance. Contact your insurance provider to determine your surgical benefits and then review your provider plan to determine if Dr. Christine Sullivan and The Sullivan Centre facility are in-network with your provider.

Procedure:

Most reputable, board certified plastic surgeons prefer not to perform cosmetic surgery on a woman before she turns 18; however, due to the reconstructive nature of this procedure, exceptions can be made based on the physical and mental maturity of the patient. In general, the best surgical results are obtained when surgery is performed a minimum of two years after the onset of menses. At that point in time, the breasts have usually achieved stable growth.

Surgery for the correction of breast asymmetry may involve one or more procedures. After examining you at your consultation, Dr. Christine Sullivan will discuss your individual options for correcting breast asymmetry. She will also discuss the specific risks and possible complications as they relate to the breast asymmetry procedure. All individual pre- and post-operative needs will be discussed with our team of nurses during your comprehensive pre-operative appointment.

Post-Op Results:

You will most likely be tired and sore for a few weeks following surgery. Specific recovery will depend on the exact nature of the surgery and the procedure(s) performed. Most women are able to return to work after one week and resume exercise after four weeks. Some scars will fade over time, but they will never completely disappear.

Associated Procedures:

  • Breast Augmentation may be necessary to increase breast size to achieve symmetry.
  • Breast Reduction, or removal of breast tissue, may be necessary on one or both breasts to achieve symmetry.
  • Mastopexy to lift one or both breasts into the desired position may be necessary to achieve symmetry.
